Dr. Kate and her team all have many years of experience in the dental field. Dr. Kate has chosen team members who have integrity and are dedicated, reliable, and professional. Regular training sessions in CPR, infection control, HIPAA, and dental materials are held so that everyone on the team is up to date and informed.
Dr. Kate and other team members volunteer at the Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM), providing free dental care, and have participated in medical/dental missions in Guatemala. Because Hakala Family Dentistry was started in 1962, patients from several generations of families have been coming in for their dental care. We are happy to have you join our dental patient family.
Dr. Kate Hakala
Dr. Kate Hakala graduated from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, cum laude, in 1989. Prior to that, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene in 1982 and worked for several dentists before returning to dental school. Her father, Joe Hakala, started Hakala Family Dentistry in 1962, and it was an easy decision for Dr. Kate to join him in his busy general dental practice. Dr. Joe is now retired, but he stops by the office periodically to say hello. You can see his wood carvings in our hall display case.
We are proud to announce that Dr. Kate has been named a “Top Dentist” by 5280 Magazine for 12 years in a row!
Dr. Kate supervises students in the dental clinic at her alma mater, CU, one morning a week. She served for six years on the Colorado State Dental Board, after being appointed to the Board by Governor Owens. She also volunteers for Dental Lifeline and the Colorado Mission of Mercy. Dr. Kate has done volunteer dentistry in Mexico, Colombia, and twice in Guatemala. In March of 2020, our office manager, Jaime, and hygienist, Suzi joined Dr. Kate on a large medical-dental team seeing indigenous people in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala. It was a fabulous experience, and they hope to return in the future.
Dr. Kate and her husband will celebrate 40 years of marriage in 2022. They have two grown children, Colin and Maura. They also have a rescue husky, Indiana, and a cat named Bibi. When she is not in the office, Dr. Kate likes to ski, hike, and travel. She is an avid reader and is studying Spanish to help with future dental mission trips.
Our receptionist, Kika, is from Kosovo. She was a dental student there before immigrating to the US with her husband and two kids in 1999. She has worked as a dental assistant for several years, including time in periodontal and endodontic specialty practices.
Kika's son was on the State Championship basketball team at Eagle Crest HS, then went to UCCS on a basketball scholarship. He plans to play professional basketball in Europe. Kika's daughter attended UCD, earning a business degree, and lives in New Jersey.
Kika loves to travel, especially to see family in Kosovo, and likes to cook. She and her husband have a pampered cat named Yoda.
Our dental assistant, Roxanne, grew up in Pueblo, Colorado. She attended the Dental Assistant Training School in Colorado Springs. Before moving to the Denver area, she worked at the High Plains Dental Clinic in Lamar, CO. She has an eight-year-old son, Tyler, who is a budding lacrosse player.
Like Jaime, Roxanne is a Kansas City Chiefs fan and also likes to watch baseball. She likes to cook, loves to be outdoors, likes to ride dirtbikes, and often rides bicycles with her son.
Jaime was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. Her parents moved their six children to Golden, Colorado in 1969. She is a graduate of Wheat Ridge High School. Go, Farmers! Four of Jaime’s siblings, son, and niece and nephew have all attended WRHS as well.
After working in early childhood education, Jaime decided to go to dental assistant school in 1993. She graduated from Heritage Dental College and was on the Dean’s list in 1994. She started her dental career working in a very busy pediatric dental office, polishing teeth, taking x-rays, and helping the dentist. During her experience in the pediatric dental office, Jaime went to different schools to help promote healthy dental habits for the children and to visit their dentist regularly. She also learned a lot about orthodontics and the management of young patients. Her experience in childhood education was a real asset for this.
Jaime decided to give the front office a try and worked at an office in Arvada for five years. She has been with Hakala Family Dentistry since 2008. Jaime loves helping patients with their insurance, scheduling, and financial needs. Jaime’s highlight of the day is when she gets to chat with the patients, who she also calls her friends. The family-feel of the office is one of her favorite things about Hakala Family Dentistry.
Jaime has a grown son, Daniel. He, and his wife Shantel, have four children whom Jaime eagerly spends as much time as possible with! They enjoy going on adventures together. They have traveled to the balloon festival in New Mexico, the Four Corners Area, and the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. She is excited about all the future adventures, as they are building a generation home in Thornton.
When not working, Jaime can be heard rooting for her Kansas City Chiefs (SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS!!), and she finds time to garden, scrapbook, and travel. Jaime, Suzi, and Dr. Kate had an amazing experience in Guatemala, providing free dental care to people in rural areas. They hope to go again.
Susan moved here from Ohio in 2001 and has been working in the dental field since the mid-1990s.
She loves living close to City Park, where she walks her puppy, Stella.
Registered Dental Hygienist
Suzi grew up in Iowa, where her mother still lives. She received an honorable discharge from the US Army and then attended the dental assisting program at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, graduating in 1989. Her degree in dental hygiene came from Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colorado in 1998.
In addition to working as a dental hygienist since 1999, Suzi has also been a volunteer firefighter. She is a certified American Heart Association CPR instructor and is a member of OSAP, The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention. Suzi goes to the annual "OSAP Bootcamp" convention every year to learn the latest in infection control procedures for dental offices and teaches staff members of other dental offices classes in infection control, HIPPA protocol, and OSHA regulations. She makes sure everyone in our office is properly trained and that we have the necessary supplies for keeping everyone safe.
In her free time, Suzi enjoys going on long bike rides with her husband, skiing, and spending time with their six small dogs. Suzi is an avid sports fan and follows the Denver Broncos and Colorado Avalanche, as well as other teams. Ask her about her experiences on the Broncos Cruise or her trip to the Superbowl! She volunteers with the Broncos.
Suzi also loves music, especially The Eagles. One of her dogs is named Henley, after Don Henley.
